Nuneaton’s A&E hit by most people ever in one day – and the heat could lead to even more

Nuneaton’s A&E department has been hit by the most people ever in one day – and the heat could lead to even more. Yesterday (June 24) George Eliot Hospital saw a record in the Accident and Emergency Department.

There were 354 people who sought care. Many of them were “particularly ill” patients and with scorching weather forecast for the next 24 hours, the department is set to potentially see even more people.

Although the participants in need of care were not directly related to the heat, hot weather can worsen conditions, the hospital said. It has issued an advisory to the community in an attempt to ensure they are not the next to need emergency care.

A hospital spokesman said: “Warmer weather can make conditions worse and cause heat exhaustion or, more seriously, heatstroke. We advise people to take some simple steps to stay safe in the heat.”

These steps include:

  • Keep away from heat if you can.
  • If you must go outside, stay in the shade especially between 11am and 3pm.
  • Wear sunscreen, a hat and light clothing
  • Avoid exercise or activities that make you hotter.
  • Cool down.
  • Eat cold foods and drinks, avoid alcohol, caffeine and hot drinks
  • Take a cold shower or put cold water on your skin or clothes.
  • Keep your living space cool by closing windows during the day and opening them at night when the temperature outside has dropped.
  • Electric fans can help if the temperature is below 35 degrees.
  • Check the temperature of rooms, especially where people at higher risk live and sleep.
