Coventry celebrated the ‘Windrush Generation’ – The Coventry Observer

COVENTRY marked the 76th anniversary of the arrival of HMT Empire Windrush with a special flag-raising ceremony.

On Friday 21 June the Septimus Severus Action Group raised the flag and held a service at the cathedral on Sunday.

Windrush Day has been held every June since 2018 to celebrate the contribution of Caribbean migrants and their families who have made their way to the UK.

Encouraged by the British Nationality Act of 1948, which granted citizenship and abode to all members of the British Empire, those on the Windrush were the first of many from British Commonwealth countries to travel to Britain between then and 1971.

HMT Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury Docks in Essex on 22 June 1948 carrying 800 passengers from the Caribbean.

Many of the generations were met with racism and not recognized for their abilities.

‘Windrush Day’ recognizes the contribution that generation and their descendants have made in helping to shape modern Britain.
