Southampton’s latest £10m transfer move could be good news for Leeds United’s pursuit of Joe Rodon

Southampton and Leeds United are two of the clubs tracking Joe Rodon this summer.

Leeds are keen to bring him back to Elland Road after the Welshman’s brilliant 2023/24 loan spell, but will face stiff competition from the Premier League.

Of course, Southampton pipped Leeds to last place in next season’s table with a win in the play-off final at Wembley, but they are also looking to rub their wounds with their interest in Rodon.

They are not the only Premier League side interested in Rodon though, the other two newly promoted sides Leicester City and Ipswich Town are also keen.

Rodon has also worked with new Leicester boss Steve Cooper, while Ipswich could effectively drop out of the race if they land ‘top target’ Jacob Greaves from Hull City.

Southampton’s pursuit of Ronnie Edwards could help Leeds

The only real advantages Leeds will have in the race for Rodon are how well he knows the team and how much he has enjoyed his time at the club.

Premier League money and football will be difficult for anyone to turn down, but Leeds may well have indirectly received a boost.

According to Sky Sports, Southampton have now made contact with Peterborough United over a move for highly-rated young centre-back Ronnie Edwards.

At £10m, Posh actually value Edwards at the same price as Spurs do Rodon, meaning he will be someone who will go straight into the first team at St. Mary’s.

Southampton already have three right-footed centre-backs from last season’s first team on their books in Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Jan Bednarek and Jack Stephens, and a move for Edwards would make him their fourth.

With that in mind, a deal for Rodon would certainly be off the books if they didn’t let players leave, meaning that’s one less squad for Leeds to worry about.

Graeme Bailey shares an update on Rodon’s interest from Leeds

As mentioned, the key to Leeds getting a deal done for Rodon will be based on how much he enjoyed his time at Elland Road. He has already hinted that he would like to return, but that was before the Wembley loss.

LeedsUnited.News He spoke to transfer expert Graeme Bailey last week to get the latest on the Leeds defender’s signing and said that while a deal will be difficult, it would be wrong to rule Leeds out of a move.

“It will come down to the player. It will be tough considering the other three can offer Premier League football. It will be a tough sell for Leeds but I wouldn’t rule them out completely.”
