Live: Flights to Bristol diverted to other airports amid fire alarm reports

Several flights to Bristol Airport were diverted to other airports this afternoon. Many passengers took to social media to say their flights had landed elsewhere, and the airport’s online ‘Arrivals’ board shows five different planes have been diverted, most heading to Cardiff.

The cause of these diversions is not yet known, but some travelers report that the fire alarm was set off. BristolLive has contacted both Bristol Airport and Avon Fire and Rescue Service for more details.

Several travelers posted on X, formerly Twitter, saying: “Fire alarm in tower but doesn’t appear to be on fire.”

Another added: “@flightradar24 @BristolAirport do we know why the last 7 inbound flights to Bristol Airport (BRS) have been diverted?”

We’ll bring you updates on this story on the live blog below.

The false alarm triggers the evacuation of the airport control tower

Flights to and from Bristol were disrupted this afternoon after the airport’s control tower was evacuated. Eyewitnesses and passengers at the airport, some whose planes were diverted to Cardiff, said they were told by staff that a fire alarm had been sounded and flights were temporarily suspended.

Six flights were diverted to other airports – most to Cardiff but at least one to Birmingham, according to the airport’s arrivals and departures board. It was also reported that some departing flights were also grounded for about an hour after the evacuation. A spokesman for Bristol Airport said the incident was ultimately a false alarm and flights began to return to normal.

Bristol Airport is now open and flights are back to normal. We are working with our partner airlines to return passengers from diverted flights. We apologize for the disruption caused to passengers.”
