Sheffield United set a Premier League record in disastrous fashion after conceding the most goals in the competition’s history.

Chris Wilder’s side have already been relegated after picking up just 16 points during a difficult first season back in the English top flight.

And while the Blades avoided breaking Derby’s record for the fewest points taken in a Premier League season, which still stands at 11, Everton broke United hearts when Wes Foderingham let another ball slips through his fingers.

Abdoulaye Doucoure struck at Goodison Park to add even more misery to a truly dismal campaign for Sheffield United and their fans.

The last team to reach 100 goals conceded was Swindon Town in the 1993-94 season

The visitors have now conceded 101 goals to break Swindon’s rogue record which was set during the 1993-94 campaign.

Most goals conceded in a single season in the Premier League

1. Sheffield United – 2024-23 – 101

2. Swindon Town – 1993-94 – 100

3. Ipswich Town – 1994-94 – 93

4. Derby County – 2007-08 – 89

5. Fulham – 2013-14 – 85

In news that is likely to only make the pain more acute for traveling fans, the Robins hit the total during a 42-game season – while the Blades took just 37 of them.

The next-closest team to have conceded in big numbers will be looking to rectify their reputation on their return to the Premier League next season as Ipswich Town look to better their record of 93 goals conceded in 1995-96.

Sheffield United have already beaten the 38-game Derby season total of 89 that the Rams achieved during their dismal 2007-08 campaign.

This season, Wilder’s side are also further adrift of the next closest, relegation-threatened Luton Town, who have scored 78 goals.

Problems up front have also plagued the soon-to-be Championship side, handing them a whopping minus-66 goal difference – 31 more than the 19th-placed side as they sit things, Burnley.

Burnley were relegated after defeat by Newcastle at St James’ Park mathematically put them out of the running for a second successive Premier League title.

Chris Wilder is adamant he wants to lead the club back into the top flight next year

Speaking after the relegation was confirmed, Wilder said that in some of their games, “the white flag had gone up”.

“It was unacceptable,” added the head coach.

But the veteran manager remains full of renewed vigor to ensure Sheffield United bounce right back after a season in the Championship.

When asked if he was keen to lead the team back up, Wilder said: “Definitely more than ever in my career.

“It takes work, it takes a lot of time. He needs a plan, some big decisions.

“There is a cycle of players who may be coming to an end at the football club who have been exceptional servants.

“We’ve got to freshen things up and I’m as eager and committed and as eager as I’ve ever been to be front and center of that with my coaches.

“The biggest thing is the mentality of the football club and what it means to be a Sheffield United player, which I think I recognize. I know what it looks like.
