Liverpool mull three moves as Arne Slot faces decision over summer exits

So where are Liverpool when it comes to this window? The feeling is that they will only make moves for players who stand out in certain positions or if they need support in other areas.

At centre-back, Lille’s Leny Yoro is now a well-known target. At 18, he is seen as a potential star of the future and if he was available then the Reds would pounce. But the feeling from Liverpool and Manchester United is that the French centre-back is heading to Real Madrid.

Liverpool can only move for another centre-back if a similar talent becomes available. Or if one of their current four decides to leave. However, they have Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Ibrahima Konate and Jarell Quansah at their disposal.

In midfield, Liverpool will hope to have Stefan Bajcetic back to fitness, which will further strengthen that area. There is a chance they could enter the market for a defensive midfielder.

There could be an addition to the front line and that is an area that new sporting director Richard Hughes is looking at, but again the feeling is that they will only move if the right player is available.

Departures could change plans. Last summer, they had plans to bring in fresh faces in midfield, but when Jordan Henderson and Fabinho headed to Saudi Arabia, the rebuilding of the position became much bigger. The Reds may need a new back-up goalkeeper if Caoimhin Kelleher pushes for a move, but they will not entertain offers under £25m for the Irish stopper.

Luis Diaz has been linked with a move but there is currently no interest in selling and would take offers north of £50m to make them tempting. Mo Salah is not expected to leave in this window. He has a year left on his contract and will either sign a new one or withdraw and leave in another 12 months. Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold also have a year left, but there is no plan to move them on.

Midfielder Tyler Morton, who was at Hull last season, is wanted by RB Leipzig, while Fabio Carvalho will have a decision to make on his future after a fruitful spell at the Tigers last term.

Youngsters such as James McConnell and Bobby Clark, who impressed last season when called up, could opt for loans to gain more first-team experience.

Darwin Nunez remains a key part of the Reds’ future plans despite his sub-par form in the two seasons since an £85m move from Benfica.

Slot will be confident in trying to get the Uruguayan forward to fire him. The plans for the returning Michael Edwards and new boy Hughes this summer appear to be to tweak a team that finished third in the Premier League last season, rather than overhaul it.

But they won’t be afraid to go all out if the right players become available in the next few weeks.
