Leeds United centre-back Max Wöber was impressive as his Austrian side beat the Netherlands to seal their place in the last 16 of Euro 2024.

While Leeds’ fixture list was confirmed today to plan their hopeful promotion back to the Premier League in 24/25, all eyes remain on Euro 2024 this week.

Outside of England’s most recent lifeless and tactically weak display, other sides have impressed greatly, including Ralph Rangnick’s Austrian side, home to Max Wöber.

Max Wöber’s Austria beat the Netherlands 3-2 to secure progress to the next round

Heading into their final game, Austria knew they had to beat the Netherlands to avoid going through the mini-table in third place to qualify for the next round.

Ronald Koeman’s side, like many major nations, have struggled to go this far in this tournament, and it showed as Austria won.

An early goal was forced by Austria in the sixth minute when a low cross was turned into his own goal by Donyell Malen.

The Dutch equalized twice in the second half, goals from Cody Gakpo and Memphis Depay canceling out an own goal and a header from Romano Schmid in the 59th minute.

However, Austria came through with maximum points, Marcel Sabitzer firing an effort into the roof of the net in the 80th minute, while France could only equalize against Poland, meaning Wöber’s side topped the group, and France came in second place.

Will Leeds be promoted next season?

Max Wöber receives a strong review from the Austrian national press

Austrian side Salzburger Nachricthen were naturally delighted with the contribution of the national team, including Wöber at centre-back.

Wöber’s efforts in the opener against France did not go well, he was booked and scored an own goal before he was rightly booked on the hour mark, but he clearly put this game at the back of his mind on Tuesday, as the report shows. his performance:

“He gave up the bitter first game against France, including his own goal. A very good performance with good passes and strong saves. Very strong.”

Wöber needed that performance against Holland

His display against France was suitably woeful and Rangnick did what he had to to take him out of the firing line for the Poland clash.

However, he rates him highly enough to bring him back into the squad, which shows good management to trust his players.

It paid off as Wöber was a key part of a team that won first place in a very daunting group on face value.
