‘Illegal fights’ at city park kiosk spark safety fears

Boxing matches take place on the bandstand at Western Park and are then posted on YouTube, raising safety concerns. The fights, described by one park user as “a massive safety concern”, have been condemned by Leicester City Council, which owns the parks.

A reader who contacted LeicestershireLive about the fights, said: “Dangerous criminals have organized illegal fights in Leicester’s Western Park. This is a big safety issue.

“You have people fighting when they’re kids playing in the park. You can see hooded thugs in some of the videos and there’s an extreme use of violence shown in these videos.”

A spokesman for Leicester City Council said: “Anti-social behavior is behavior that can cause harassment, alarm or distress, so it is likely that this behavior falls under that description. We will alert the local police beat team and if we can identify those involved and they live locally we can work with the police to warn them off such activities in the area and advise on safer and more appropriate ways to get involved in sport and physical activity.

“Our park rangers will check the area during their site visits. We do not condone this type of activity and would ask that anyone who witnesses such behavior should report it to www.leics.police.uk.”
