Aldi reveals wish-list locations for three new stores in Leicestershire

Aldi bosses have revealed three sites in Leicestershire where they want to build new stores. The supermarket says its wish list follows an appeal to the public to tell them where new Aldi’s should be built.

The retailer, which is the UK’s fourth largest supermarket chain, revealed the locations as bosses look to continue their “rapid expansion” across the UK. More than 4,000 sites were submitted to a public survey last month, with the list now whittled down to areas Aldi is seriously considering over the next few years to meet its target of 1,500 UK stores.

Three of these could be in Leicestershire. The former, if given the go-ahead, would be based in Leicester itself, but the exact location is unclear. Aldi already has stores in Woodgate, St George’s Way and Abbey Lane in the city.

A new Aldi could also be coming to Leicester Forest East, where the nearest store is Aldi on Meridian Way in Braunstone. The final location on the supermarket’s wish list is Birstall, which currently has no Aldi. Their nearest store is in Syston’s Melton Road, while further afield is Aldi at Beaumont Center in Beaumont Leys.

No official plans have been submitted for these sites, but they would follow in the footsteps of Leicestershire’s newest Aldi at Swinfen Vale in Ellistown, near Coalville. A new store is currently being built in Shepshed.

Bosses hope to meet public demand. Jonathan Neale, managing director of National Real Estate at Aldi UK, said: “We want to make high-quality food accessible to everyone, but we can’t do that while there are still some towns and areas that either don’t have an Aldi. or have capacity for additional stores.

“We recognize that there is huge demand in certain regions for more stores, which is why we decided to seek public input on our latest list of priority locations. They have helped us identify where demand is greatest and we will continue to work to bring Aldi to as many people as possible.”
