Ciaran Brennan’s father sends ‘wonderful’ message to Sheffield Wednesday after departure

Ciaran Brennan has ended his eleven-year stay at Sheffield Wednesday.

The defender joined Sheffield Wednesday’s academy in 2013 and went on to make his senior debut in the Carabao Cup seven years later.

Brennan enjoyed a brief spell in the starting line-up in the 2021-22 season but mainly spent his time on loan on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old has spent time with Gainsborough Trinity, Notts County, Swindon Town and Hartlepool United, most recently returning to Hillsborough in January.

Unknown to him at the time, Brennan’s last appearance for the Owls came in January 2022 and he has now officially left the club on a free transfer.

The centre-back quickly found a new club, with League Two side Newport County confirming his arrival yesterday.

Brennan’s father addresses Sheffield Wednesday exit

After spending most of his life on Middlewood Road, Brennan’s father now took to social media to say thank you on Wednesday.

He wrote on X: “Ten years of contributing to this wonderful club week in and out. It was an absolute honor. Thanks to literally hundreds of @swfc people – coaches and staff through the academy and first team and so many great teammates. They helped. and educated Ciaran in so many ways.”

The Owls unload another academy graduate

Brennan made just 18 appearances for Wednesday in the four years following his senior debut, while managing just 47 career appearances in total.

The defender has rarely managed to earn regular game time even on loan, so his exit comes at an important time as he looks to finally kick-start his career.

The former Republic of Ireland U19 international is one of many players to end a troubled era at Sheffield, with Danny Rohl now looking to reignite the club and bring in some fresh faces.

Brennan joins the likes of Reece James, Lee Gregory and Tyreeq Bakinson in a dead forest.
