Suspected dangerous driver, named after a 21-year-old man, has died

A suspected dangerous driver has been named after a man died in a crash.

Merseyside Police received a call on 12 January 2022 that a Mazda hatchback had been involved in a crash with a man on Moss Bank Lane in St Helens. Emergency services attended the scene but the man, later identified as 21-year-old Adam Cunliffe, was pronounced dead at the scene.




A spokesman for the force said following a “comprehensive and complex investigation” a man has now been charged in connection with the fatal crash. Paul Whitfield, 54, of Hammond Street, St Helens, was charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

He is due to appear at Liverpool, Knowsley and St Helens Magistrates’ Court this afternoon, Wednesday 26 June. Adam’s father previously paid tribute to his son, who worked as an animal technician at the University of Manchester.

The tribute said: “A nephew, son, stepson, brother, half-brother, cousin and father to four-year-old Alexia and nine-month-old George, Adam was a super bright young man, nice, polite and caring. in a million.

“He had a very promising career working at the University of Manchester as an animal technician and his potential was quickly spotted by his bosses and he was destined to rise through the top ranks. He had the ability to light up any room he entered. with his bubbly personality and sense of humor.

“He made me proud every day and touched the hearts of so many people and he will be massively missed. He was and still is my world, my everything. I love you Adam my son until we meet again.

“I have been overwhelmed by the support from friends and family and would like to thank everyone for all the kind words, flowers and congratulations. I would also like to thank Ian and Mark the family liaison officers who are helping the family through this process. “
