How much does a general election cost?

It has been five years since the country last went to the polls for a general election. Previous general elections in the UK have cost hundreds of millions of pounds.

The 2017 snap election cost £140 million. Rishi Sunak’s decision not to hold the general election alongside the local elections in May is expected to have been costly to the taxpayer.

Doing so would have saved the country £33.2m, according to The Mirror’s analysis of previous election costs. It has also been revealed that the 2019 by-election to replace outgoing Tory MPs cost £4m.

Of the £140 million spent on the 2017 general election, £98,310,000 was used to cover the fees and expenses incurred by polling officers running the poll. A total of £42,540,000 covered the delivery of candidate campaign information.

However, figures have not been published on the cost of the 2019 general election. Statements of election costs are available by looking at the UK Government’s Consolidated Fund accounts.
