Cameron Dawson admits he ‘can’t wait’ to reunite with former Sheffield Wednesday ‘roomier’

Cameron Dawson’s exit from Sheffield Wednesday was confirmed this week.

The goalkeeper joined Sheffield Wednesday in 2010 and has now left to join Rotherham United on a free transfer.

Dawson played a key role in the Owls’ promotion back to the Championship, amassing the highest percentage of clean sheets than any other ‘keeper with more than one appearance (56%).

The 28-year-old managed 18 appearances in the second tier before losing his place to James Beadle in the second half of the campaign.

Despite dropping down the pecking order, Dawson was one of the players offered new contracts at Hillsborough this summer.

However, he opted to leave the club in search of regular game time and made a short trip to Rotherham.

Having joined the likes of Will Vaulks, Lee Gregory and Reece James in leaving the club, he will now be reunited with the latter at the New York Stadium.

Dawson “can’t wait” to reunite with Reece James

James also played a key role in the Owls’ promotion push before losing his place in the team this season, making just five appearances under Danny Rohl.

The defender was then released at the end of the season and confirmed he was joining The Millers last month.

James will certainly be delighted by the news of Dawson’s arrival, with the player admitting he “can’t wait” to be reunited with his former team-mate.

Speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield, Dawson said: “Yeah, brilliant. I can’t wait to see Reece again. I talked a lot with him in the summer. He was my room for big plays at Sheffield Wednesday so I’m very close to Reece. He’s obviously a great guy, you know, quite a brilliant guy. A really committed player. Yes, I look forward to working with him again.”

The summer outings are the start of something exciting at Sheffield Wednesday

The departure of Dawson and James from the club is certainly bittersweet given the success they have brought to the club in the 2022/23 season.

However, it marks the beginning of a new era under Rohl. The German is keen to refresh the squad and bring in players of a much higher quality.

Wednesday were still relying on a number of players who played in League One, so it was no surprise that they ended up battling relegation.

The Yorkshire outfit need to improve on these departing players, but their contributions will certainly not be forgotten.
