Graham Smyth says the £11m player will never play for Leeds United again after what happened this week

Leeds United still have a number of decisions to make when it comes to returning loanees this summer.

The Whites have slowly but surely moved up the list of eight first-team players who left on loan last summer, with Robin Koch and Luis Sinisterra the only ones to make their long-term futures clear during the season.

Brenden Aaronson then became Leeds’ next decision as Daniel Farke provided the shock route back to redemption at Elland Road.

Max Wober, Rasmus Kristensen and Diego Llorente now face the most uncertain of futures, with none of the three having the option of going out on loan again. There is a real possibility that the top two will follow Aaronson on his return.

Jack Harrison and Marc Roca complete the set, with the former rejoining Everton on loan for the second time and the latter set to join Real Betis permanently.

Smyth gives an update on whether Jack Harrison could return next season

It would be fair to say that when all eight players left temporarily last summer, it was met with a fair share of animosity from Leeds supporters.

News of Aaronson’s reinstatement to the team certainly received a mixed reception, but doing it so early is likely to help him when it comes to his relationship with the fan base.

The more others like Wober and Kristensen leave it, the more likely it will be difficult for next season.

But speaking on the latest episode of the Inside Elland Road podcast, Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth revealed which of those players will not be welcomed back.

Smyth suggested Harrison’s decision to leave on loan for a second time now almost certainly means he has played his last game for Leeds, even if the Whites are promoted next season.

He said: “Jack Harrison has got his dream back at Everton, his second loan at Goodison for what he hopes will be his last season at Goodison before he goes to the new stadium. I don’t think anyone is surprised and we all knew it was going to happen.

“We didn’t expect him to come back and play in the championship. I don’t think anyone expected him to come back and play for Leeds, but I think this is the final nail in the coffin.

“There might have been a chance for reinstatement after one season on a case-by-case basis, like Aaronson. Enough people will accept him back, there is a chance for him to rewrite history.

“But I think if you decide twice in a row you’re not going to be with Leeds, that says it all really. Even though Leeds have grown this season, can you see Jack Harrison being welcomed back if he decides he wants to be a Leeds player again?

Could Harrison join Everton permanently?

Reports surrounding his first loan move to Goodison Park suggested there was a £20m purchase option to sign Harrison.

However, after Leeds’ failure to gain promotion, Everton were quick to take advantage of the fact that they had another clause that allowed him to leave temporarily again.

Unlike 12 months ago, Smyth claimed the deal to take him back to Merseyside did not include a permanent option.

According to Fabrizio Romano, however, there is a chance Everton could still seal the deal this summer, hopefully for more than the £11m Leeds are paying Manchester City in 2021.

The transfer insider suggested there is a “concrete possibility” that Everton could reach a permanent deal in “due course”. This will probably depend on the outcome of their takeover.
