Wigan Warriors and Wigan Athletic will support The Brick in raising awareness of poverty with a sleepover at The Brick Community Stadium.

The Brick Community Stadium will open its doors on Friday 2nd August to raise awareness of the number of people in Wigan and Leigh who are experiencing poverty and homelessness.

The Big Sleepout, along with Amazon, Pall Mall Carpets and Leisuretec UK, will raise vital funds for The Brick Charity to ease the financial pressures facing individuals and families.

Families in Wigan and Leigh may face different types of poverty – fuel, food, hygiene and period poverty – but did you know that across the UK 894,000 children do not have a bed of their own?

Bed poverty is a critical part of child poverty, which manifests itself in different ways for different families. Some children share beds with their parents due to the lack of separate sleeping spaces, others sleep on the floor, while some cannot replace broken beds or buy new bedding.

The Brick provides furniture and household items – beds, duvets, pillows, bedding – to families in need every week, and in the past 12 months The Brick has donated over 165 brand new beds.

This crisis is real and happening in our community, but together we can make a difference. You’ll be joining us in giving up your bed for a night to sleep in the stadium concourse in support of some of Wigan’s most vulnerable people.

Funds raised from the Big Sleepout will support projects such as The Brick and multibank furniture reuse schemes which source and redistribute essential household items to people in need through their network of referral partners such as social workers and schools.

Here’s what some of The Brick’s beneficiaries had to say:

  • “It made me feel appreciated. It made me feel that I was worthy enough to receive nice things. I walk taller now because I feel better about myself.”
  • “This project had a big impact for me. It shows that people care. I had nothing and I am so grateful.”
  • “The donations from The Brick have made me feel better because I can provide for my family and focus on my gas and electricity bills. My house is warmer and looks better. Children are happier at home. It also made the kids want to take care of the bedroom and help me tidy the house.”

By joining The Brick Stadium Sleepout, in partnership with Wigan Warriors and Wigan Athletic, you’ll be highlighting and raising funds for the work The Brick continues.

The Brick Community Stadium Sleepout promises to be an amazing night where attendees can meet Wigan Warriors staff and representatives, enjoy live music and engage in a range of exciting activities! It will be a fantastic event for the community and you can book your place now.

Help us make a difference so everyone in Wigan and Leigh has a place to dream.
