Sandwich recall update as FDA determines level of risk

Tens of thousands of recalled sandwiches have been given a classification by the Food and Drug Administration.

Earlier this month, sandwiches and burgers produced by Classic Delight LLC were recalled due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination, and the FDA gave the recall a Class II risk classification.

According to the FDA’s definition, a Class II recall is “a situation in which use of or exposure to an infringing product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, or where the likelihood of serious adverse health consequences is remote “.

“The recall was initiated after environmental samples tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes,” the agency said in the announcement, adding, “Production of these products has been suspended while FDA and the company continue to investigate the source of the problem.”

When people eat food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, they can develop an illness called listeriosis, which is a common cause of food poisoning in the U.S. While the symptoms can be unpleasant, most people make a full recovery.

However, the disease can cause life-threatening illness in children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems. The disease is also linked to causing miscarriages.

According to the FDA, symptoms can begin days and weeks after consuming a contaminated product. Those with mild illness may have a range of symptoms, including fever, muscle aches, fatigue, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. If a more serious infection occurs that may require hospital treatment, it can lead to headaches, neck stiffness, loss of balance, confusion and convulsions.
