Arne Slot’s confirmation as Liverpool boss has held up amid the Euro 2024 issue

Arne Slot is set to take over from Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager this summer, but negotiations have not been straightforward, with the Dutchman’s demands proving problematic.

Jurgen Klopp anticipates Aston Villa clash

Arne Slot has revealed that a deal to become Liverpool’s new boss is close to done – but the Dutchman faces a battle to bring his backroom team with him from Feyenoord.

Slot will sign a deal to follow Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season after a series of positive meetings with new Kop director Michael Edwards. But the Dutchman admitted there are still some details to iron out – and his plan to bring in assistant Sibke Hulshoff, second assistant Etienne Reijnen and head of performance Ruben Peeters is also bogged down by complications.

Liverpool, who have already agreed to pay Feyenoord an £11m compensation package for Slot, have been told they will have to shell out a further £2m for their trusty squad. Hulshoff’s position is further complicated by the fact that he will go to Euro 2024 as Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman’s assistant this summer – and Liverpool want to start his contract on July 1, before the tournament ends.

Slot, 45, assured Dutch reporters he was linked with Anfield, saying: “I can’t reveal the details right now, but it’s not about my contract. There is a combination of factors that is why there is no announcement yet. But don’t worry. It will happen. I know I’ve said this every time for the past week, but I expect it will really be a matter of days. Some things just need more time.”

Slot are also on the hunt for a new goalkeeping coach after John Achterberg decided to follow Klopp out of the club. Achterberg is set to accept an offer to work with former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard at Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq.

Liverpool face top-four chasing Aston Villa on Monday night before bringing the curtain down on Klopp’s eight-and-a-half-year reign against Wolves at an emotional Anfield on Sunday. The German is looking for a positive end to his tenure after seeing off Liverpool’s bid for a quadruple crumble in the weeks since they were knocked out of the FA Cup at Manchester United. Unai Emery’s side will provide a stern test.

Klopp said: “We have a chance to go over 80 points again. You should never take such things for granted. Villa will want to have a good last game at home as they have played an incredible season. They will probably qualify for the Champions League.
