Bristol Rovers reject offer from League One rivals

Bristol Rovers have rejected a bid from fellow League One rivals Huddersfield Town for midfielder Antony Evans, according to the Bristol Post.

In a season where Gas struggled and finished 15th, the 25-year-old was a rare shining light. He managed 52 appearances in all competitions last season and managed to score 10 goals while assisting nine times. He was also named Player of the Season but is now set to enter the final year of his current contract.

After a mixed first campaign at the Memorial Stadium, the former Everton youth has been outstanding in the last quarter and it was always expected that there would be interest from elsewhere.

Evans has been a fan favorite since arriving at Rovers three years ago, joining German side Paderborn and has since become a crucial asset as they stabilize in the third tier following promotion from League Two in 2022.

Whether or not the Terriers intend to follow through with an improved offer remains to be seen, but if Rovers don’t sell Evans this summer, they risk him leaving on a free transfer this time next year.

Portsmouth, who won promotion to the Championship last season as League One champions, have also been linked with the attacking midfielder. Speaking about Evans’ contract situation in May, manager Matt Taylor said BBC Radio Bristol:

“We talk about it now throughout the season. Those talks and offers are over, so it happened.”

“We’re not naive enough to let a player who is your best player go into the final year of his deal without even having a conversation. So, like everything else in football, I think we’re going to learn a lot about each other over the next eight weeks.”

“We want Antony here. I think it’s important to say that he didn’t start the season in the team and it’s not my thing, he worked his way back into the team and then he was consistent and then to get all those awards, he’s a bit like Chris. Martin. Probably our two best and biggest performers didn’t start the season with either the club or the team, which is surreal to say.”

“Credit to both of them for going through a tough time and then producing and that’s football. It’s about producing performances and whether it’s Chris’ goals or Antony’s goals and assists, they’ve just been consistent about it and hopefully that continues for a long time.”

The writer’s vision

No disrespect to Rovers here, but Huddersfield are the bigger club. As is the case with all footballers, Evans will want to play as high as he can and would get more chances with the Terriers as they look for an immediate return to the Championship.

With his contract in the final year, it would be more beneficial for Gas to work with Town and get a player fee while he still can. However, a bidding war between Huddersfield and Portsmouth is not out of the question and Taylor’s side will be aware of the possibility.
