Batteries blamed for Mitcham warehouse fire – South London News

Five tonnes of household waste went up in flames after a warehouse fire in Mitcham was blamed on batteries.

Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters tackled the blaze in Hallowfield Way on Tuesday.

Part of the warehouse and a small part of a factory excavator were damaged by the fire, but there were no reports of injuries.

The fire is believed to be accidental and caused by batteries igniting flammable materials.

A spokesman for London Fire Brigade said: “Lithium batteries are liable to fail if incorrect chargers are used, so it is important to always use the correct charger for the product and buy an official one from a reputable seller.

“Batteries can also pose a fire risk if they are short-circuited, submerged in water or damaged, so it is very important to protect and store them carefully.

“Try to make sure they are not bumped during use or during transport as this can increase the chance of cell damage.”

The brigade was called shortly before 10.30am and the incident was over for firefighters at around 11.15am. Crews from Mitcham, Wimbledon, Norbury and Tooting Fire Stations attended the scene.
