Major leak repair on US 280 may leave Birmingham Water Works customers with little or no pressure

Birmingham Water Works customers along US 280 may experience low water pressure or no water starting at 10 p.m. Thursday while the utility makes repairs to a major leak in the area, officials said today.

The water works will repair a water main off US 280 near the Shades Mountain Filter Plant and Summit.

Customers in the area, including Birmingham, Vestavia Hills, Mountain Brook, near Summit, Cahaba Heights and along Rocky Ridge Road, could be affected for at least eight hours starting late Thursday.

The spills come weeks after customers in that area complained of a foul smell and an “earthy” taste in the water that the BWWB attributed to geosmine in the water.
