St Helens U16 6 – 16 Leeds Rhinos U16

But Guy Harvey

With two tries from Tom Richardson, as well as a solitary try from Jack Smith, the Rhinos brought victory back home on a night where both sides could be proud of their defensive efforts.

Leeds started the game in great fashion, passing the ball around, allowing the home side to start their set in the Rhinos’ half and crashing over for the try seconds later in the form of center Luke Brighouse, converted by Alfie Maden. Both sides then began an arm wrestle and neither wanted to lose the battle on defense, but with both sides working so hard on defense, errors began to creep into the game.

However, Leeds hit back shortly after winger Tom Richardson received the ball thanks to quick thinking from scrum-half Harvey Butterworth, who opted to drop down the blindside and, with quick hands, gave Richardson the space to to dive into the corner. With a touchline conversion from Zak Lloyd, the Rhinos pulled back to level points.

Both teams wanted to take the lead but the defending on the night was near perfect from both teams and would see a point scored until six minutes before half time when Butterworth and Richardson again combined at dummy half, spotting the Saints defense tight, allowing Butterworth. to fire a bullet pass straight to Richardson who dives in the corner but the conversion this time missed sending the Rhinos into the break 10-6 ahead.

Leeds started the second half strongly in defence, again keeping the home side confined to their own half for most of the game. Their great moments in the half including dangerous runs from full back Wade White, second row forward Zak Lloyd breaking the line regularly to name just a few standout performances.

But Leeds looked to have extended their lead when striker Logan Staveley-Carr crashed under the posts but the referee ruled he had moved after being held up. But sixty minutes into the game Leeds finally broke through the Saints defense and crept down the right flank and winger Jack Smith touched down and Zak Lloyd converted from the byline gave Leeds the lead again of 16-6, which will not be modified for the rest. of the game.
