Supermarket and takeaway plan for Leicester city center abandoned Sainsbury’s

The former Sainsbury’s store in Leicester’s Humberstone Gate could be brought back into operation. The store building has been empty since the supermarket giant closed its city center store in September 2022.

Now a planning application has been submitted to Leicester City Council for the vacant building, which could see it split in two with new shops moving in. Applicant Mr. Fiyak provided limited details regarding potential new tenants.

However, planning documents suggest one of the businesses could be a supermarket and the other a takeaway. Mr Fiyak sought permission from the city council to make alterations to the front of the buildings, creating access to office space above the old shop and sub-dividing the building.

New accesses to the main part of the building, likely to be a supermarket, would also be created at the front and rear of the premises. Part of the back of the building would also be demolished to create parking spaces and space for smoke vents, the plan said.

A public consultation on the plan will run until Tuesday 4 June. Leicester City Council has set a target date of Tuesday June 11 to rule on the scheme.
