New supermarket and flats plan for ‘tired’ Coventry site

New flats are planned for a ‘tired’ area of Coventry. Developers want to build a car park and replace a shop at the Westmede center in Whoberley.

If the scheme is approved, a block of flats with 21 bedrooms and three studios will go up on the site at 10 Whitaker Road. Developers would replace the ground floor of the Nisa Extra building with flats and a shop.

Heron Foods is slated to open on the site and there would be 17 spaces for customers to use, along with 48 spaces for apartment residents. One report says the plans have been in the works for eight months.

A statement from agents CDRB Architects said the scheme would regenerate brownfield land and provide a more modern and “viable” convenience store. It added: “Westmede Local Center has been identified for further development now that the local community facilities on the west side of Whitaker Road have been completed.

“The area behind the local center is poorly laid out and looking tired and in need of improvement, which the application proposals will clearly achieve.” The plans were endorsed by the council this week and have yet to be decided.
