Cigarette warning after Croydon balcony catches fire – South London News

Firefighters have issued a reminder of their smoking safety advice following a flat fire in Croydon last night.

A second-floor balcony in Milton Road was destroyed by fire. No injuries were reported.

Brigade fire investigators believe the fire was accidental and was caused by the unsafe disposal of smoking materials.

A spokesman for London Fire Brigade said: “We prefer that you do not smoke at all, but if you are a smoker it is absolutely vital that you make sure that the cigarette is completely extinguished when you have finished smoking it.

“If you don’t, you risk starting a fire that could not only destroy your home, but cost you your life.

“If you smoke on the balcony, you should never throw the cigarette over the side. It could easily catch the light on property on a balcony below or next to yours.”

The brigade was called at around 1.30am and the fire was brought under control by 2.20am. Firefighters from Croydon, Woodside, Norbury and West Norwood stations attended the scene.

Smokers are advised to ensure that smoke alarms are installed in every regularly used room in the house, including hallways.

Other essential tips include never smoking in bed, always making sure to put out cigarettes properly and dispose of them carefully.

Matches and lighters should always be kept out of reach of children and lit cigarettes or cigars should never be left unattended.

Empty the ashtray carefully, making sure all smoking materials are removed and cool. If you must smoke, do so outdoors, but be sure to dispose of cigarettes properly.
