Opening of Chippenham exhibition celebrating Maud Heath

The monument and statue are located in Wick Hill and were erected in 1838.

“Part of the appeal of Maud Heath is this mystery,” Mrs Barnett continued.

“The name Maud Heath is well remembered and most local people will have used and seen her path and the monuments to her memory.

“There are even poems, stories and songs written in her honor.”

Part of The National Lottery Heritage funded project with Yesterdays Story, Wiltshire and Swindon History Center and Chippenham Library, the exhibition will discuss the myths surrounding Heath and uncover her true story.

It will also explore the various ways in which she and her path have been celebrated by artists, writers and ordinary people over the centuries.

The museum also commissioned three early career artists with connections to the city to create artworks in response to the story of Maud Heath and her journey.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to build their own road and record their memories of the landmark.
