WestJet mechanics are issuing a strike notice for possible industrial action on Friday

CALGARY – WestJet says it faces a possible strike by its mechanics starting Friday.

The airline says the Fraternal Association of Aircraft Mechanics has issued a strike notice that could mean a work stoppage as early as 5:30 p.m. (MT) Friday.

The announcement comes after the union called off strike plans last week and returned to the bargaining table.

WestJet says it will begin taking steps in the coming days to manage the impact of possible industrial action.

The airline canceled dozens of flights last week before contract talks resumed.

Union members voted overwhelmingly to reject a tentative agreement earlier this month and voiced opposition to WestJet’s request for arbitration.
