Junior NHS doctors walk out at start of latest five-day strike – Inside Croydon

Junior doctors working in NHS hospitals walked out this morning at the start of their latest five-day strike in the ongoing pay dispute with the government.

Long standing dispute: NHS doctors are carrying out a new round of strike action from this morning

Junior doctors make up around 50% of doctors in the NHS and despite extensive planning and cover arrangements, the latest strikes by junior doctors are likely to cause widespread disruption. The strike will last until Tuesday, July 2, at 7:00 a.m.

Instead of backing the doctors’ union’s demands for better pay and conditions, Health Labor spokesman Wes Streeting launched a call for the strike to be postponed. This is the 11th strike since the doctors began their strike as they want a gradual 35% pay rise. Doctors say they haven’t had any meaningful discussions with employers since last year.

Urgent care continues to be prioritized by NHS London during the industrial action. “People should still call 999 in life-threatening emergencies and contact NHS 111 for other health problems, as well as local services, including GPs and pharmacies,” NHS London announced today in a declaration.

NHS London Chief Medical Officer Chris Streather said: “NHS London is currently facing a number of challenges, with trusts – particularly in South East London – directly affected by the serious cyber incident which occurred earlier this month June and a number of other organizations. involved in providing mutual aid to those directly affected by the attack.

“However, the NHS, as always, has prepared extensively for these strikes and it is important that people continue to turn up for care if they need it. To help us deliver care to those who need it most, we are asking people to continue to use 999 and A&E in life-threatening emergencies.

“If you have not been contacted or informed that your planned appointment has been postponed, please attend as usual.”

The NHS is working closely with the doctors’ union, the British Medical Association, to address any patient safety concerns during industrial action following the ongoing cyber incident impacting South East London.

Pharmacies and GPs are unaffected by the strikes, so patients can still receive appointments and health advice.
