Wigan Athletic should consider these Taylor Moore alternatives

Wigan Athletic have looked into a deal for defender Taylor Moore along with Barnsley and Wycombe Wanderers this summer but he is heading to Bristol Rovers, according to a report by Football Insider.

Wigan Athletic will have to find other centre-back targets as they prepare for another year in League One under Shaun Maloney. They finished 12th in the League One table last term and were 14 points off the play-offs in the end.

The Latics have delved into the market so far this summer to bring in Andy Lonergan, Dion Rankine, Calvin Ramsay and Michael Olakigbe to bolster their ranks. They have the chance to bring in more players over the next couple of months.

The likes of Josh Magennis, Jordan Jones, Ben Amos and Stephen Humphrys have all left the DW Stadium recently which has freed up space and funds in their ranks.

Here is a look at three Moore alternatives they should target…

Caleb Taylor

The 21-year-old has returned to West Brom following his loan spell at Bolton Wanderers during the second half of last season. The Baggies have a decision to make on what to do with him in this window.

Taylor would fit the bill for Wigan Athletic as he is young, has potential and has already played a decent amount of senior games so far in his career. He has been on the books at the Hawthorns for his entire career to date and has also had a stint away at Cheltenham Town in the past.

Andy Smith

He is down the pecking order at Hull City behind Alfie Jones, Jacob Greaves and Sean McLoughlin and could be worth a look by the Latics. The 22-year-old has made five appearances for the Tigers so far after rising through their academy.

Smith has also had temporary spells away at Salford City, Grimsby Town and Cheltenham Town over recent years to get some experience under his belt. The Banbury-born man’s contract at the MKM Stadium expires in 2026 but it remains to be seen whether he is in Tim Walter’s plans.

Will Fish

The Mancunian needs to test himself in the Football League after two loans at Hibernian from Manchester United. Wigan Athletic would be an ideal next destination for him.

Fish, who is 21-years-old, has progressed up through the youth ranks at Old Trafford and has played 73 games for Hibs in all competitions.
