Coach Scott Barney is moving on to the next stage of his career – DiscoverHumboldt.com

After six seasons at the helm of the Humboldt Broncos, coach and general manager, Scott Barney is moving on to the next stage of his career as head coach of the Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

Barney began his Humboldt Broncos journey as an assistant coach following the Broncos bus tragedy, then was promoted to interim head coach following a coaching change midway through the 2018-19 season. He went on to lead the Broncos to a 14-6-1 record to finish the season, after which the Interim tag was lifted.

Since then, Barney has led the Broncos to six straight playoff appearances, two division titles, and is considered one of the best coaches on the Canadian junior hockey landscape, both in performance and player development for post- secondary.

“When I took on this role, I knew his arrival would be a challenge, not only from a hockey perspective, but from a community that was grieving. We quickly learned that this community is solidified in its strength, overcoming nature and commitment to each other, and we wanted a team that reflected that and gave the same effort back, said Barney.

Over the past six years, changes have been expected in almost every aspect of the organization. Changes that included board member turnover, countless new players, staff and staff, and even new jersey designs and tiered chairs; one thing that remained constant was Barney and his unwavering criteria of what it took to be a Bronco.

“The Humboldt Broncos organization is blessed to have Scott and his entire family as part of our Bronco family and the Humboldt community. His passion for the Broncos is undeniable, not only does he bring in a competitive team every year, but he shows so much loyalty to the organization. “There are not enough words to thank Scott for his time and dedication to the team, and we wish him nothing but the best in his and his families’ next journey,” said Broncos President Amanda Schlachter.

The Broncos were a powerhouse under Barney’s tenure with an overall record of 169-71-15. What’s more, his knowledge of the game and ability to get the best out of his players have labeled him highly regarded in development, with more than 40 players securing post-secondary commitments, including 12 at the NCAA Div I

“It’s been an honor to work with all the amazing players that have come through the door of the Broncos locker room. It’s my privilege to develop them, mentor them and take them to the next level of hockey and life, but they give back to me as well. I know I learned and I can attribute a lot of who I am as a coach because of them,” Barney said.

Barney and his family will return to their home province of Ontario. But nothing can take away Humboldt’s “Green and Gold” that has been embedded in their hearts.

“Thank you all. There are so many people who have been instrumental in my time here, who have been a part of the team in any capacity, or part of the Broncos cheering community. The Broncos past, present and future will always hold a special place in my and my families hearts.”

Coach Barney has achieved a remarkable status in the hearts of the Broncos because his accomplishments define what a coach truly is; never driven by wins or losses, but instead to lead with integrity, leaving a positive legacy in the hearts of the Humboldt hockey community.

The Bronco Organization wishes Barney and his family the best of luck and best wishes in their future endeavors
