Police make a new arrest in the investigation into the murder of Matthew Schofield

Detectives investigating the murder of Matthew Schofield have today (Thursday 27 June) arrested a teenager – the 17th person to be arrested in the case. The 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and, following a police interview, was released on bail.

Matthew’s death was the subject of an ongoing police investigation, with no one charged with his murder a year after his death. He was found dead in Belgrave Road, Belgrave, Leicester, in the early hours of Sunday, June 11, 2023.

Inquiries led officers to discover that the 34-year-old man had been assaulted in the street, close to the junction with Belgrave Circle, at around 3am.

Police said in a statement today: “Over the past year, detectives have continued to work to establish the circumstances in which he died and to identify those involved in the incident before Matthew was found.

“A total of 17 people have been arrested in connection with the investigation. Thirteen people are currently on bail, one person has been released following investigation and three have been released without further action.

“Throughout the investigation, police continued to appeal for people to come forward with information that could help.”

Last December, six months after the attack, Matthew’s mother Emma Daniels joined senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Mark Parish in making a heartfelt appeal for anyone who knows anything to “do the right thing”.
