Flat fire in Milton Road caused by cigarette, says Brigade – Inside Croydon

A second-floor balcony was destroyed in a flat fire on Milton Road in Croydon town center last night, which the London Fire Brigade believes was caused by the unsafe disposal of smoking materials.

Fire risk: of course you just couldn’t smoke

No injuries were reported.

A spokesman for London Fire Brigade said: “We prefer that you do not smoke at all, but if you are a smoker it is absolutely vital that you make sure that the cigarette is completely extinguished when you have finished smoking it.

“If you don’t, you risk starting a fire that could not only destroy your home, but cost you your life.

“If you smoke on the balcony, you should never throw the cigarette over the side. It could easily catch the light on property on a balcony below or next to yours.”

The brigade was called at 1.34am and the fire was under control by 2.21am. Crews from Croydon, Woodside, Norbury and West Norwood fire stations attended the scene.

The LFB reiterated its advice for people to ensure they have smoke alarms installed in every room in their home, including the hallway. “If you must smoke, do so outdoors, but make sure you dispose of cigarettes properly.”
