Early Championship predictor: How Sheffield Wednesday could fare in 2024/25

The 2024/25 Championship season will be Danny Rohl’s first full campaign as manager with Sheffield Wednesday.

Danny Rohl took on his first managerial job in October 2023, taking charge of Sheffield Wednesday who were winless in the Championship and rooted to the foot of the table.

Rohl won 16 games in all competitions. Sheffield Wednesday eventually finished 20th in the table and secured their Championship status for another season.

Sheffield Wednesday’s 2024/25 fixture list was published on Wednesday, with the Owls kicking off their campaign with a game against Plymouth Argyle at Hillsborough.

After a return to form under Rohl and a strong start to the summer transfer window, many could look to Sheffield Wednesday to drastically improve 20th place.

Inevitably, many will back the relegated Premier League sides to do well next time; Burnley, Luton Town and Sheffield United.

Burley, however, are currently without a manager after losing Vincent Kompany to Bayern Munich. Meanwhile, Sheffield United endured one of the worst Premier League seasons in history last year and are undergoing some drastic changes to their playing squad this summer.

Of the three, Luton Town appear to be the most stable and best equipped to secure promotion next season, although the Hatters are yet to make any summer signings.

Elsewhere, Middlesbrough are making some positive early moves in the transfer market and will be expected to challenge, while usual suspects West Brom and Norwich City will be tipped to compete for a place in the top six.

Leeds United could join Burnley, Luton and Sheffield United in the title race after suffering defeat in the play-off final last season.

Who are the favorites for relegation to the Championship in 2024/25

Opposed to relegated teams; teams promoted from League 1 will be backed to be near the bottom of the table next season.

Derby County finished 2nd last season but have made a slow start to their summer transfer plans, while Portsmouth recently let go of Oxford United’s Josh Murphy, who helped the U’s win promotion through the play-offs- last season’s League One.

Certain teams struggled to pick up the pace last season and can be expected to struggle again next year; the likes of Blackburn Rovers, Millwall, Plymouth Argyle and Watford could all be in and around the bottom three if they don’t enjoy positive summer windows.

What Sheffield Wednesday will be like in the 2024/25 Championship season

For Sheffield Wednesday fans, after the upheaval of last season and the signings made this summer, with some names being linked, it’s hard not to get carried away when thinking about next season.

The form chart from the second half of last season has Sheffield Wednesday well into the top 10. So there’s certainly reason to believe the Owls can finish well above the drop zone next season.

A mid-table finish would mark a drastically improved Sheffield Wednesday campaign under Rohl and bring much-needed stability to the club after several years without her.

But there could also be a sense that mid-table would be an underperformance; that’s how highly rated Rohl is and how well Sheffield Wednesday are expected to perform in the transfer market with him in charge.

While there are some clear favorites for the title next season, there doesn’t seem to be a team ready to destroy the competition, with the likes of Leeds United set to lose a few key players.

The title race could be wide open, as is the race for the top six with no clear dark horse emerging so far.

For Sheffield Wednesday, a top-half finish would be a success. Anything else would be a bonus and it certainly feels like Sheffield Wednesday could spring a few next time around.
