With the country in the grip of Euro 2024 international competition fever, we can feel that the start of the 2024/25 season is something in the distant future.

However, the draw for the first round of the Carabao Cup takes place this morning, with teams from the Championship through to League Two learning their opponents at the start of what they hope will be a dream cup run.

The draw takes place at 11.30am, with a regionalized system meaning teams are drawn against other teams from their region – either the 32-team Southern Section or the 38-team Northern Section.

Most Premier League teams enter the competition in the second round, with the seven competing in the European competition – Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester United – entering the third round.

The teams will be drawn by two-time League Cup winner Frank Sinclair – who won with Chelsea and Leicester – and Gary McAllister, who won as part of a treble of sorts with Liverpool in 2001.

We start with the south pull.

There are certainly some interesting potential ties in the first round, with the regionalized system offering the potential for many local rivalries to play out.

Up north, Stoke City and Port Vale could be a tasty encounter, as could Blackpool v Preston North End. Sheffield United vs Sheffield Wednesday would be an outstanding match.

In the south, a Bristol derby would stand out, as would AFC Wimbledon v MK Dons. Cardiff v Swanses is always an interesting one, although we see a lot of games these days.

Between 2005 and 2013, the competition was dominated by what is now the ‘Big 6’, with Spurs winning their fourth trophy in 2008 with a 2-1 win over Chelsea.

In 2011, Birmingham beat Arsenal 2-1 thanks to an 89th minute goal from Obafemi Martins.

Although the winners often come from the top teams in the Premier League, there is a lot of variation in the other sides that reach the final.

Since 2000, teams including Tranmere Rovers, Bolton, Wigan, Cardiff, Sunderland and Southampton have all reached the final.

The first round matches will take place in the week commencing August 12 – the same week the lower leagues begin their league campaigns.

The competition has been dominated by the bigger sides of late, with Swansea City the last team outside the ‘Big 6’ Premier League to win the competition. That win came in 2012/13 when they beat a superior side Bradford City who were in League Two at the time!
