Monkey magic as Twycross Zoo welcomes its new arrival

Twycross Zoo has welcomed its latest eye-catching arrival – a bright orange baby monkey with leaves. The small primate, also known as François’ langur, is a species recognized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as endangered. It is estimated that there are only 2,500 left in the wild.

But the population is thriving at Twycross Zoo, in Atherstone, with the latest arrival coming just weeks after the birth of another of François’s langurs. This brings the number at the zoo to nine. Both youngsters, who are cousins, are recognizable by the bright orange hair they have as youngsters. Eventually, it will fade to black.

Lynsey Bugg, Senior Curator at Twycross Zoo, said: “We are delighted to announce the birth of another langur to François at Twycross Zoo. With wild populations of François’ langurs continuing to decline, the addition of another newborn to our troop is a welcome sign of hope for continued efforts to conserve and protect this endangered species.

“Welcoming a new addition to our François band of langurs so soon after the last one is incredibly exciting. When we first announced the arrival, visitors flocked to catch a glimpse of our bright new orange baby, and now you’ll be able to see the two endangered youngsters together – which doesn’t happen very often. Now that the two are a little older, visitors may see them start to explore away from their mothers and practice their jumping and climbing skills. As a conservation charity, Twycross Zoo’s main aim is to conserve and protect animal species.
