A kitchen ingredient will get rid of flies as infestation approaches

Homes across the UK will be infested with flies in the coming weeks thanks to recent weather conditions, according to Rentokil Pest Control. Flies are a common sight in the summer months. And this year’s unusually wet and warm spring means the UK could be in for a summer of unwanted infestations.

Flies thrive in warm, humid weather, which speeds up their metabolism, leading to faster development and higher reproductive rates. The combination of rising humidity levels in the UK over the last few decades and the heat wave predicted for this month creates a perfect environment for these insects.

The consequences of fly infestations can be both a nuisance and a public health risk, and some flies can spread diseases such as Salmonella and E. coli.

Paul Blackhurst, Head of Technical Academy at Rentokil Pest Control, said: “Many parts of the country are expected to enjoy warmer weather over the summer months and so there is likely to be a noticeable increase in fly populations. Although this reflects a natural seasonal increase and is not a cause for alarm, warm and humid temperatures can cause fly populations to increase further.

  1. Indoors, to help prevent infestations, it’s important to dispose of food waste quickly, cover food compost bins, and keep kitchen doors and windows well screened or closed.

  2. Installing insect screens on doors and windows can also help keep flies out, limiting their access to indoor spaces and reducing contact with food preparation areas.

  3. Fly traps can help limit the volume of flies in outdoor areas around your home or business before they enter your property. DIY fly traps using cider vinegar can also work well, but for persistent infestations, it is recommended to seek professional help.

“A female housefly can produce up to 500 eggs in her lifetime, which can hatch in just 8 to 24 hours and develop from egg to adult fly in just 5 to 7 days; so it is vital to get ahead of this all-too-common pest problem before it quickly spirals out of control.”
