Huge rescue operation after cow fell into mine shaft

A cow had to be rescued after falling into a disused mine in Cornwall. Emergency crews were called to rescue the animal after it fell 20 meters at An Dinas Castle in St Columb Major.

Several crews from Cornwall Fire and Rescue were sent to the scene, near Newquay, at around 3.40pm yesterday (Thursday, June 27). Once on the scene, a firefighter was lowered into the mine to assess the condition of the cow.




Firefighters then set up a safe work area to lift the animal to safety. A second firefighter was sent into the mine to calm the cow before the rescue began.

Firefighters equipped the cow with animal recovery equipment and began lifting the cow to safety.

Once the cow was successfully lifted from the mine shaft, it was left in the care of the farmer and the vet. The cow is not believed to have sustained serious injuries.

In a statement, Cornwall Fire and Rescue said: “Animal Rescue. On arrival it was discovered that a cow had fallen into a mine shaft. St Dennis assisted crews from Bodmin Community Fire Station and Tolvaddon Community Fire Station”.
