A man has died following a crash involving a motorbike and a car in Wigan.

Emergency services, including the air ambulance, rushed to the scene in Bickershaw Road, Bickershaw, on Wednesday night.

Police say the motorcyclist – a 43-year-old man – suffered “significant injuries” and died at the scene.

Officers have now launched an investigation into the collision and at this stage believe the rider was heading towards Wigan when he collided with an oncoming car.

The driver of the car remained at the scene and no arrests have been made.

In an update, GMP said: “Initial inquiries suggest a motorbike was driving westbound on Bickershaw Lane, Wigan approaching the junction with Victoria Terrace.

“At the same time a car was traveling eastbound along Bickershaw Lane, Wigan. The car slowed down to make a right turn into Victoria Terrace and as the car made this manoeuvre, the motorbike collided with the near side of the car causing the motorcyclist to come off the bike.

“Emergency services attended the collision but unfortunately, despite their best efforts, a 43-year-old man, who was riding the motorbike, suffered significant injuries and died at the scene. His family is being supported by officers.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Greater Manchester Police on 101. DC Carl Boydell, from the force, said: “Our thoughts are with the family of the man who lost his life in this collision. We also thank those who stopped at the scene to help and provide care to the victim.

“We are in the early stages of our investigation and are appealing for anyone who saw the incident or may have captured anything in the locality that may be of interest to us at the time of the collision to come forward and help us understand what happened. .”
