Van plunges into the river from the ramp

Dramatic footage has captured the moment a van was recovered from a river in Cornwall after it plunged into the water. The St Austell Coastguard Rescue Team was called to Bodinnick Ferry Slip in Fowey on Monday (June 24) after receiving reports of a person in the water.

However, on their way to the scene at around 12.15pm, they were told that a vehicle had gone into the water and was completely submerged. The person in the van had a lucky escape and was taken to the lifeboat pontoon by Fowey Harbor Patrol.

From there, the team returned to the lifeboat station and began caring for the victim until South West Ambulance Service arrived. In a post shared on Facebook, St Austell Coastguard wished the person a full recovery and thanked those who attended the scene.

A picture from the scene that was shared alongside the post shows a white van, which had significant front-end damage, being pulled from the river. The full post read: “Team tasked with putting person in water at Bodinnick Slide.

“Update on route, vehicle has entered water and is fully submerged. Further update, the occupant has self-rescued and is being transported to the lifeboat pontoon by Fowey Harbor Patrol.

“The team went to the lifeboat station and began casualty care until South West Ambulance Service arrived. We would like to thank all parties who witnessed this incident and wish the occupant a full and speedy recovery. Remember, in a coastal emergency, call 999 and ask for the coastguard.”
