Charlton Athletic boss talks Alfie May’s future amid Huddersfield Town transfer interest

Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones insists the club are “under no pressure to sell him to another rival” amid speculation linking last season’s League One goalscorer Alfie May with a move to Huddersfield Town.

The South London Press reported earlier this month that the Addicks had rejected a bid from the Terriers for the forward and have since stated that Town have “continued their attempts to reach a deal”.

May has scored 27 goals in 50 games in all competitions for Charlton over the past year following his move from Cheltenham Town last summer, where he scored 48 goals in the past two campaigns.

The striker was signed by the Robins in January 2020 during Michael Duff’s time in charge, with the pair working together for two-and-a-half seasons before the Terriers boss left to join Barnsley.

With the Terriers rumored to be targeting May, Jones insisted the Addicks must not sell the striker and the manager vowed to act in his club’s “best interests”.

“It’s a very difficult one with Alfie. He’s our player and we love Alfie here, he’s a fan favorite and he scores goals for us,” Jones told the South London Press.

“I don’t want it to be just about Alfie. What we have to do with decisions on any player is to think about what is in the best interests of the club. If keeping Alfie is the best thing for this football club, then that’s what will happen.
