The Sheffield Wednesday ace shares a message as the Owls players return for pre-season

Sheffield Wednesday’s players returned to pre-season training on Friday.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has already made significant progress in the transfer window, including the defensive signings of Max Lowe and Yan Valery, the latter of whom he coached during his time as assistant manager at Southampton.

They are also set to sign midfielder Svante Ingelsson, who is likely to partner Barry Bannan in midfield for the Owls.

These signings were worked on despite Rohl not being in the country as he contributed to ITV’s Euro 2024 coverage, however the German is now back in S6 as he prepares for the new Championship season.

The options at centre-back still look light ahead of the new season at Hillsborough, however they will be improved with the fitness of one of their starting defenders.

Sheffield Wednesday defender Bambo Diaby shares a fitness update

Sheffield Wednesday centre-back Bambo Diaby shared an Instagram post with the caption ‘back to work at home’ as he decked out in all his Wednesday training gear.

The Owls defender was injury-free last season but suffered a facial injury in their 3-1 away win at Blackburn Rovers.

Diaby was in and out of the squad for Wednesday last season, having started 26 games.

However, the end of the season saw the Spaniard get less game time, making just five starts in his final 13 appearances of the 2023/24 season.

On Friday, Rohl welcomed Sheffield Wednesday’s first-team players back to Middlewood.

Keeping Bambo Diaby fit will be crucial for Sheffield Wednesday

The options at center linebacker are sorely lacking, especially with the uncertainty surrounding the future of Di’Shon Bernard, whose contract is set to expire this summer.

That leaves just three recognized centre-backs at the moment, although new signing Valery and Liam Palmer could come in when called upon.

Despite not scoring a goal in the 2023/24 campaign, Diaby could be essential behind the set pieces with his 6ft 2in height, especially with the assurance that Bannan will stay for another year.

While Diaby may not be the first name on the Sheffield Wednesday team sheet this season, he provides much-needed depth in the position and is a perfect player to bring on from the bench.

That was the case in Sheffield Wednesday’s three straight wins at the end of the season, where he tightened up the defense to ensure Wednesday got the crucial wins on the board.
