Manchester United ranks outsiders – Bookies now make top six Premier League races

The race for the Premier League’s top six is fast approaching.

In just seven days we reach the end of this 2023/24 season.

A race to the wire and so many twists and turns.

For some time now it has looked like a three-way contest between Manchester United, Chelsea and Newcastle United.

These latest results, while having a major impact on how the next top six in the Premier League now look…

Saturday, April 27 – Manchester United 1 Burnley 1

Saturday, April 27 – Newcastle United 5 Sheff United 1

Saturday April 27 – Aston Villa 2 Chelsea 2

Thursday, May 2 – Chelsea 2 Tottenham 0

Saturday, May 4 – Burnley 1 Newcastle 4

Sunday May 5 – Chelsea 5 West Ham 0

Monday, May 6 – Crystal Palace 4 Manchester United 0

Saturday May 11 – Newcastle 1 Brighton 1

Saturday, May 11 – Forest 2 Chelsea 3

This is now the updated Premier League table for Sunday (12 May 2024) morning:

Newcastle United must fight for a point against Brighton on Saturday.

While Chelsea led at Forest, they went 2-1 down in the 74th minute, only for goals in the 80th and 82nd minutes to see out Pochettino’s side with all three points.

With Chelsea trailing with just ten minutes to go, it would have meant Newcastle only needed to beat Man U on Wednesday to secure sixth place.

Lots of what ifs, but the fact remains that yesterday’s point keeps Newcastle United in control. Whatever happens in the other games, it doesn’t matter if Eddie Howe’s side beat both Man U and Brentford.

Next up, of course, is Man U at home to Arsenal today, where if, as expected, Arsenal get all three points to challenge for the title, then surely the slim chance of Erik ten Hag’s side still having a chance to reach the top six.

The bookies certainly seem to see it that way…

Listed below are the now updated overall Premier League odds available from the various bookmakers to finish in the top six this 2023/24 season (in brackets were the odds before Saturday’s games):

1/1 Newcastle United (4/7)

1/1 Chelsea (11/4)

12/1 Manchester United (8/1)

As you can see, the bookies now make Man U 12/1 underdogs. Those odds will increase significantly if Arsenal win at Old Trafford today.

So Newcastle United are now seen as absolutely neck and neck with Chelsea.

Wednesday night seems huge…

These are all the remaining fixtures for the three clubs fighting for the Premier League’s top six:

sunday 12 may – Man U vs Arsenal

Wednesday May 15 – Man U – Newcastle, Brighton – Chelsea

sunday 19 may – Brentford – Newcastle, Brighton – Man U, Chelsea – Bournemouth

Due to their superiority on goal difference over Chelsea (10 goals worse) and Man U (25 goals worse!), Newcastle United knowing that if they end up level on points with either of their rivals then almost guaranteed to they will finish above them. .
