Man guilty of attempted murder after headbutting victim in ‘brutal’ attack in Leicester

A man has been found guilty of attempted murder after headbutting another man and hitting him with a “large stick” in Leicester, police said. Sambarashe Mushonga (37) was jailed for 25 years yesterday (Thursday June 27) after the “brutal” attack at Milton Crescent in Beaumont Leys.

Leicestershire Police said members of the public overpowered Mushonga and detained him shortly after the attack. The force said the victim suffered a “significant” brain injury following the incident on Friday, January 19, but has since spoken to officers.

Police confirmed they received a call at 8.46pm on the day of the attack where the caller was “clearly disturbed” by the attack. The caller then reported that Mushonga was being held by people in the area but was trying to break free.

Leicestershire Police said its officers arrived at 8.55pm and attended to the injured man, who was unconscious and “bleeding badly”. A second crew was said to have arrived moments later and Mushonga was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

The force said the injured man was known to Mushonga, of Upper Temple Walk, and had been staying at his flat in the previous days. They also stated that Mushonga could not recall the incident in his police interview as he admitted he was drunk, but agreed he was the attacker when shown CCTV footage of the incident.

CCTV also captured Mushonga being restrained by two men, as well as a woman providing first aid assistance to the injured man. Mushonga was charged with attempted murder and also assault after pushing and tearing the clothes of one of the men who detained him, police added.

Detective Constable Katie Smith, who was the investigating officer, paid tribute to those who helped the victim that evening. She said: “The victim was subjected to a sustained and brutal attack by Mushonga and by the time she arrived at the hospital she was in a critical condition.
