Luis Diaz: It’s so special to have a fan song – I try to give everything for the club

Luis Diaz has revealed his gratitude for the song dedicated to him by Liverpool fans and explained his determination to repay the faith he received.

The fans’ song has been used more frequently in recent months in honor of the Colombian, who on Saturday was was named the Reds’ Standard Chartered Men’s Player of the Month for April.

And it made a major impression on Diaz.

“It’s something beautiful and special because every time we go out and give it our all. To support the institution, the club. To do what I came to do from the first moment I arrived,” the number 7 told Liverpoolfc.com.

“I always wanted to perform well. I always wanted to be one of the best, trying to respect everyone. To see the fans singing that song, that beautiful song, leaves something very beautiful marked on you, to take as a memory.

“I’m very happy. I thank them a lot for what they do. I always go out on the field happy because I know I have all their support.”

Nearing the end of his second full season at the club since joining from FC Porto in 2022, Diaz has made 49 appearances in all competitions this term.

He provided 13 goals and five assists in those matches, while playing the most minutes of any outfield player in the Liverpool squad apart from Virgil van Dijk.

Assessing his development, he said: “I’ve grown a lot.

“From the beginning of my career until today, I feel that as the days, the years go by, living every experience in every different team, coming to this great club that is Liverpool, you learn a lot.

“You learn more and more to be a professional, to be a better person, to be a good teammate and a good guy. The truth is, I’m very happy to be here. Great years ahead for the club, no doubt about it.

“Personally, I will always try to do my best, always try to give 100 percent, always stand out on the pitch, which is what I came (here) to do. I am always grateful to God for every opportunity.”

Having previously dropped points in their Premier League title challenge, the Reds responded last weekend with an impressive 4-2 win at home to Tottenham Hotspur.

They will finish the campaign in at least third place and with a return to Champions League football assured, but Diaz admitted they must take the experience of recent weeks into account.

“It’s no secret, I didn’t finish as I hoped,” he said.

“For us, it was crucial to win the league and all the competitions we were in. Unfortunately, the results lately could not be obtained.

“We fell (behind) as a team, but we had a decent season, both individually and as a group. There are many things to improve in order to have a perfect season. But I’m happy and content to be here.”

Liverpool’s penultimate game of 2023-24 and Jürgen Klopp’s reign take them to Aston Villa for an 8pm BST Monday night kick-off.

On the outlook for Unai Emery’s fourth-placed side’s approach, Diaz said: “We have, as in all games, always high expectations (of ourselves).

“We know that they are a very strong team, that in the Premier League no game is easy. It’s a super-difficult match.

“We have to be ready to respond to what they come to do and do what we know, which is to go out there and win. We always try to win, look for the three points and get that win.”
