Over 30 traders exhibit at the Manchester Queer Art Market

More than 30 traders displayed their work yesterday at the Manchester Queer Art Market in Proud Place, just off Oxford Road.

The market has been running since December 2022, but this was the first time at Proud Place, a queer community space run by the Proud Trust, an LGBT+ youth charity.

All three floors were packed with traders and shoppers admiring the vibrant and striking artwork.

One of the founders, James Saunders, an artist himself, started the market to promote an inclusive space for queer art.

“I found that a lot of markets weren’t right for my work — you’d get a lot of comments and appearances,” he said.

“It’s really nice to have a marketplace that’s just for the queer community — you know your work will be accepted and welcomed.”

The Proud Place building opened 2 years ago and provides events, community groups and co-working spaces to the local LGBT+ community.

Jennifer Skelland, manager of the centre, said: “Our vendors in this market support diverse voices, give people a platform to explore their creativity in a way that they may not get in other spaces.

“Everyone left smiling, it was such a lovely evening.”
