The last look inside the iconic Greater Manchester nightclub before it is demolished

It’s been 10 years since an iconic waterfront nightclub finally collapsed after the bulldozers were sent in.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Wigan Pier nightclub was a mecca for dance music lovers from all over Greater Manchester and beyond.

The pier, immortalized by George Orwell’s 1937 graphic depiction of the plight of the working class in his book The Road to Wigan Pier, was originally a loading dock where wagons loaded coal onto barges bound for the Leeds-Liverpool Canal.

However, to people of another generation, the area became synonymous with “The Pier Nightspot”.

The club’s popularity peaked in the mid-1990s with the explosion of house music and the rave scene, but regeneration of the area led to its demise and it was demolished in 2014.

When news broke that the legendary club was to be pulled down, people on Facebook shared their memories of the Wigan Pier nightclub in its heyday.

Dawn Roscoe said: “Gutted, I had some of the best nights there ever growing up. Good times, they passed, but I never forgot xxx”.
