Wakefield Trinity confirm fourth Super League signing for 2025

Wakefield Trinity have confirmed the signing of Huddersfield Giants player Olly Russell with the Championship leaders preparing for life in Super League.

Trinity were relegated in 2023 after starting the season with 14 consecutive defeats, but it was their two defeats to local rivals Castleford Tigers that finally sank them as they finished at the foot of Super League.

Since relegation to the Championship the club have gone from strength to strength with their new owner Matt Ellis promising big and delivering big.

The latest evidence of that was tonight’s confirmation from the club that they have signed half-back Olly Russell from Huddersfield Giants for the 2025 campaign, with Russell becoming the fourth Super League star to sign for Daryl Powell’s side.

Earlier this year, Wakefield Trinity made the double strike for England internationals Tom Johnstone and Mike McMeeken from the Catalans Dragons on four-year deals. Just this week they confirmed the signing of Hull FC man Cam Scott.

It’s yet another statement of intent from Wakefield Trinity, who are clearly very confident of returning to Super League via IMG points. The club developed their stadium and attracted huge attendances to help run up the score and win the 1895 Cup.

They currently sit top of the Championship table and are yet to lose a league game, and are now even stronger for 2025 with the arrival of Russell, a move confirmed in a statement on the club’s website.

It read: “Wakefield Trinity are proud to announce the signing of Olly Russell from Huddersfield Giants on a four-year deal until the end of 2028!

“The England Knights midfielder becomes the fourth signing for 2025, joining Tom Johnstone, Mike McMeeken and Cameron Scott in committing to Wakefield.”

Russell, who was in the pecking order at Huddersfield behind Adam Clune and Tui Lolohea until Jake Connor’s recent exit, has also spoken about a move to Wakefield Trinity.

He said: “I am very excited to be joining Wakefield Trinity for at least the next four years and hopefully beyond. I’m sure it’s the best place for me to continue to improve my game and develop my knowledge to another level under Daryl and the rest of the coaching staff.

“The club have signed some brilliant players to match the quality they already have and it is going in the right direction on and off the pitch. That’s why I’m looking forward to the challenge of bringing more silverware back to Belle Vue. See you in 2025 Wakey Fans.”

Trinity head coach Daryl Powell said: “Olly is a quality midfielder who has so much potential to become a top player.

“I think he is at the stage of his career where he needs to become the main holding midfielder in a team and we are delighted to give him the opportunity to do just that.

“He’s a fierce competitor and a quality communicator who I believe will get the best out of the people around him consistently. I look forward to working with him over the coming years as we move towards achieving our goals at Wakefield.”
