Roberto Firmino is causing confusion for Liverpool after posting a picture wearing the English rivals’ shirt

Roberto Firmino has baffled Liverpool fans after uploading a picture of himself wearing a Burnley away kit to his Instagram story.

The former Reds striker left the club last summer to secure a move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli, for whom he scored nine goals and provided seven assists in all competitions during his debut campaign.

Firmino is currently enjoying a break after making 34 appearances in the Middle East in the 2023/24 season and is on a summer break having been left out of Brazil’s Copa America squad.

Still working, despite not having a game on the horizon, the 32-year-old uploaded a picture of himself working out at a gym while wearing Burnley strips from last season.

Making this sartorial selection even stranger is the fact that Firmino didn’t compete in the Premier League last season, meaning he hasn’t taken to simply changing shirts full-time. A potential reason could be linked to Clarets full-back Vitinho, who is a fellow Brazilian and could have influenced this decision.

Firmino’s long-term future in the Middle East remains up in the air after just one year, with Al-Ahli’s manager reportedly asking the club to “listen to offers”. Matthias Jaissle is believed to be “not entirely happy” with the 2019 Champions League winner and would like to replace him.

This comes after reports over the winter suggested the attacker was ready to leave his current employers in the January window after losing his place in the starting eleven between the start of November and the end of December.

Al-Ettifaq, coached by Steven Gerrard, were one of the clubs linked for his services, but a deal did not materialise. Commenting on the prospect of adding Firmino to his squad, Gerrard said in December: “Obviously I know Bobby extremely well, I’ve been a massive fan. I’ve followed him for years. At the moment he’s the player to Al-Ahli, so it’s very difficult for me to comment on this situation, but I loved Bobby Firmino from the first day I watched him and I’m a big fan.”
