Teenager arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after elderly man was stabbed

An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a 70-year-old man was stabbed in Wigan.

Officers were called to Edge Hall Road in Orrel shortly before 4pm on Thursday (June 27) following reports of a stabbing. The man was rushed to the hospital, where he remains with serious injuries. He is receiving specialist treatment.




Police have arrested an 18-year-old man following what they called the “shocking” incident, but are urging members of the public with any information to come forward.

Chief Inspector Glen Rees of Greater Manchester Police’s Wigan district said: “We understand the shock and concern this incident will cause in the community, but I want to make it clear to everyone that we are doing everything we can to find those responsible.

“Since the incident, we have this morning arrested a key suspect and he remains in our custody for questioning.

“I would also like to pass on our thanks and sincere thanks to the members of the public who attended the scene immediately afterwards to help treat the victim.

“Our dedicated officers remain on patrol in the area to provide reassurance and visible support. I would encourage anyone with information to come forward and tell us. This can be done by calling 101 quoting incident 2319 of 27/06/2024.”
