Avengers 5 is apparently being redesigned – here’s everything you need to know

Avengers 5 is apparently still coming in May 2026, but it’s hard to know if the movie is on track.

In February 2024, it was reported that Marvel was reworking the film and it would no longer be called Avengers: Kang Dynasty. Jonathan Majors was dropped by Marvel on December 18, 2023 after being found guilty of assault and harassment.

However, it was added that Majors’ character, Kang, was already downplayed before the sentencing after the poor performance of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. Marvel has yet to officially comment.

It wasn’t just with Kang that there were changes. Destin director Daniel Cretton left the film in November 2023, while Michael Waldron – already writing Avengers: Secret Wars – joined the film as a writer replacing Jeff Loveness.

We still don’t know who will take over from Cretton as director from May 2024.

The next Avengers movie is one half of a double bill that will bring the Multiverse Saga to a close, but before we can even think about Secret Wars, there’s a lot to do with Avengers 5.

Here’s everything you need to know about Avengers 5.

Avengers 5 release date: When can we expect Avengers 5?

In June 2023, Avengers 5 has been delayed by Marvel and will now hit theaters May 1, 2026.

This is a one-year move from its original release date of May 2, 2025, and also saw Avengers: Secret Wars move from May 5, 2026 to May 7, 2027.

We still don’t know when filming will take place or if the behind-the-scenes changes will cause another delay for the film.

Will Iron Man appear in Avengers 5?

We’ll get to the potential wider cast of Avengers 5 in a bit, but there’s currently confusion over whether Robert Downey Jr will return as Iron Man in the next film or possibly Avengers: Secret War.

In April 2024, he said he would “gladly” reprise the role, adding: “And look, I always say, ‘I’m never, ever betting against Kevin Feige.’ It’s a lost bet. He is the house. He will always win. .”

This might confuse you a little, considering that Iron Man was killed off for good in Avengers: Endgame, and it also confused Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo.

“I don’t know how they would do it. I don’t know what the path to that would be,” Anthony said, with Joe adding, “I mean, I closed that book, so it would be up to them to figure out how to reopen it .”

If Secret Wars happens, then it’s possible we’ll see a lot of former Avengers, or at least some version of them. But for now, it doesn’t look like we’ll be seeing Iron Man in the next movie.

Avengers 5 Cast: Who Could Be In Avengers 5?

As mentioned above, Jonathan Majors has officially been dropped by Marvel, so he will not be reprising his role as Kang the Conqueror.

Majors played the character (or variations of it) in both seasons of Loki and also in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. Kang was being set up as the MCU’s new Big Bad, but it’s unclear what will happen next.

Marvel could recast the character, or it’s possible that Kang will no longer be in the MCU and another villain will take his place.

The original Avengers team has been almost completely deconstructed – Black Widow and Iron Man are dead, Captain America is an old man, and Thor has gone into space with the Guardians.

But it’s well established in the movies and comics that the Avengers lineup is fluid. Basically any MCU hero could be cast at any time.

If Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel is going to take over the MCU as suggested — assuming Marvel can figure out what to do with her other than send her flashing across the galaxy — then she’s going to need a team to lead.

If not the Avengers, who? (Don’t tell the defenders, please.)

Sam Wilson is no longer the Falcon, having taken up the mantle of Captain America, while Hawkeye and the Hulk make up the remaining heroes from the original lineup.

Other heroes like Spider-Man, Valkyrie, War Machine, Winter Soldier and Doctor Strange are still in the MCU, but there are plenty of candidates for a new version of the team.

There have been rumors that movies based on the New Avengers, Young Avengers, and the evil version of the team, the Dark Avengers, are in development. Marvel could go with the West Coast Avengers or even the Great Lakes Avengers.

Either of these would provide an opportunity to continue and refresh the Avengers legacy. In particular, the introduction of the Young Avengers would be a positive step in the continued path to representation that Marvel has long struggled with.

America Chavez comes out as a lesbian in Young Avengers vol 15. Wiccan, one of Scarlet Witch’s children, also comes out as gay and dates another young Avenger, Hulkling. The group also consists of Prodigy, a bisexual hero of African-American descent, and Nor-Varr, a “not completely straight” character who dates Kate Bishop.

The inclusion of these characters in the MCU would begin to shape an accurate reflection of today’s society – letting people from all walks of life see themselves as superheroes.

Kate Bishop joined the MCU in the Disney+ series Hawkeye, and since the TV shows are now part of the universe in a bigger way than before, it could mean that they all pave the way for the introduction of the Young Avengers.

She reprized her role at the end of The Marvels and Kamala Khan certainly seemed to be setting up the Young Avengers so they could have a role to play in the next Avengers movie.

It looks like Chris Hemsworth’s Thor will appear in some capacity, at least. Unless his interview with Wired in June 2022 contained an escape.

Discussing the early days of the franchise, Hemsworth catapulted into the future. “We didn’t really know, none of us knew if it was going to work or if there was going to be an extension beyond the first movie into Thor 2, 3, 4 or Avengers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,” Hemsworth said.

“It was all just an idea and a dream. And one I agreed with.”

Yep, looks like he signed up for us.

Avengers 5 plot: What will Avengers 5 be about?

Initially, it looked like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was setting up why Kang would be a dangerous villain in the future.

The Kang we met in the quantum realm, who was trying to escape back to normal sized reality, was apparently crushed to death.

But the mid-movie scene revealed an entire council of Kangs, including the real big bad, Immortus, who, after summoning “all of us”, Kang, gathers them saying, “They’re going to take everything we’ve built, so let’s not waste anymore. time.”

We thought this was what the new movie would build off of, but with Majors out, it’s unclear if Kang is still the villain.

It means that, at this point, we have no idea what Avengers 5 will be about, other than that it will probably set up Secret Wars — assuming that’s still the plan.

Avengers 5 Trailer: Any footage of Avengers 5 yet?

With the release date being delayed, it also means it will be even longer before we see anything from Avengers 5, probably not until 2025.

Sorry about that.

Avengers 5 will be released in theaters on May 1, 2026.
