Manchester United are seriously considering a move for a £59.3m player who dreamed of being Cristiano Ronaldo

Manchester United are now seriously considering a move to sign a centre-back target this summer, but it will be expensive.

Of all the positions Manchester United need to strengthen this summer, there is probably none as important as centre-back and now an option is being seriously considered.

This has already attracted interest in several options, with Jean-Clair Todibo being the latest as Ineos looks set for a legal battle to open the door to that move.

Now, however, it has been reported that the £260,000-a-week player is being seriously considered by United and it is a player that Erik ten Hag knows very well.

Manchester United are now seriously considering a move for Matthijs de Ligt this summer

Despite obvious financial concerns, Matthijs de Ligt appears to have found himself a serious target for United this summer.

This comes in line with renowned journalist David Ornstein, who reported that De Ligt is now a serious candidate to be signed this summer as Ineos look to strengthen their defence.

Ornstein adds that there are still no talks or certainty that the move will go ahead, however, with the Dutchman becoming an increasingly viable option for the Red Devils this summer.

Interestingly, he then adds that the move would be independent of the ongoing interest in Jarrad Branthwaite. This suggests two centre-halves could arrive this summer, something United could do with.

If United were to move for De Ligt, it would likely cost £59.3m, which Christian Falk suggested in his column for CaughtOffside. That said, he added that United would only be willing to spend £29.6m, which doesn’t make us think a deal is close.

De Ligt dreamed of being Cristiano Ronaldo and owned a Manchester United kit

De Ligt’s signing has long been rumored around Old Trafford since he broke through for Ajax as a teenager.

De Ligt recalled this in an interview that was quoted by the Bundesliga’s official website: “I always wanted to be Cristiano Ronaldo when I was playing football in the garden.

“That was especially during his time at Manchester United. My first football shirt belonged to him and ever since.”

This young love affair with United, coupled with the fact that he is a Ten Hag favorite, suggests this is a move that would appeal to many people involved.

However, he should win over a healthy chunk of the fan base that might not be convinced by him.
